Salmon Species Rediscovered
| February 22, 2011 | Posted by admin under Pet News |
This week in Japan, a type of salmon that scientists believed went extinct nearly a century ago was rediscovered in a lake near Mount Fuji. Unlike many types of salmon that migrate between lakes and the sea, kunimasu salmon could only tolerate fresh water and were native to Japan. Scientists had believed the salmon were wiped out in the 1940s after a hydro-electric dam was built near Lake Tazawako in northern Japan. When the dam opened, the acidity levels of the water changed and the kunimasu salmon began to die off. A local fishing association caught the unusual fish and… more
One Dog Per Home in Shanghai

Law makers in the Chinese city of Shanghai are considering a proposal that would limit each family to have only one dog. A recent study from Oxford University discovered a parallel between the brain size of mammals who live in social groups compared to those who are not. The researchers studied the brains of several types of mammals from 60 million year old fossils all the way through to present day animals of the same lineage. They analysed data on the size of the brain in relation to the overall growth rate of their bodies to see if they could uncover any patterns. They discovered that animals who live in developed social groups, such as dogs and monkeys, experienced the highest rate… more

Breed-Specific Legislation Defra Consultation
| February 3, 2011 | Posted by admin under Pet News |
In November the UK government released the results of the dangerous dogs Defra consultation. The overwhelming majority of people polled, including a large number of veterinarians and animal experts, felt that the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991 had failed and needs to be overhauled. The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) and the British Veterinary Association (BVA) both agreed that breed-specific legislation is not working. They believe new legislation that appraises each dog’s behaviour – not their breed – is the best way to protect the public. Breed-specific legislation has been enacted around the globe as government’s way of responding… more
