Dog Survives Tornado

Each year tornadoes tear through much of the Midwest and Gulf coast of the United States. This month one lucky dog survived a tornado that ripped through her home. The tornado touched down in the Kirkstone subdivision just outside of Buford, Georgia. According to local fire officials, about 25% of the homes in the area suffered extensive damage. The National Weather Service rated the tornado as an EF-2 based on damage sustained to buildings and trees in the area. Holiday Decorations- Bo the pipe cleaner dog!

It’s time to decorate for the holidays again! President Obama’s family is no exception, but they have an unusual holiday decoration at the White House this year. A four foot replica of their dog, Bo was custom-made out of pipe cleaners and is now on display. Over 100,000 guests are expected to view the decorations this month. Bo is a Portuguese water dog, so his fur is mostly black with some white on his chest, chin and paws. California artist Laura Dowling started the project with a custom-made topiary frame. Holiday Gift Giving Pet Statistics

While over half of all pet owners polled by Associated Press this month said that their pets would be getting at least one holiday gift, the dogs are winning out by a slight margin. Fifty six percent of dog owners said their canine companions would have a gift waiting for them under the tree, while only 48 percent of cats can expect the same. The poll also showed nearly the same percentage of women to men who planned to purchase pet gifts – 56 percent of women said they would buy something for their pets compared with only 49 percent… more

A recent book by Helen Brown has quickly become an international best seller in 12 countries, and a film deal is also in the works. “Cleo: The Cat Who Mended a Family” is based on the author’s personal life experiences with a tiny black kitten. The story actually played out many years ago but Brown wanted to wait to write the book until she felt her experiences could help other families going through difficult times. Flies and midges cause pain and discomfort over the warmer months for many horses, but for those suffering with Sweet Itch (around 5% of the UK horse population), it’s quite a different story. Sweet Itch or Summer Seasonal Recurrent Dermatitis is essentially an immunity problem as the response generated from a bite is not proportional to the cause. Horses with Sweet Itch have an allergy to the saliva of the midges that bite them, especially the Culicoides midges.
